    Social and Cultural Contexts of Alcohol Use: Influences in a Social-Ecological Framework.

    Alcohol use and misuse account for 3.3 million deaths every year, or 6 percent of all deaths worldwide. The harmful effects of alcohol misuse are far reaching and range from individual health risks, morbidity, and mortality to consequences for family, friends, and the larger society. This article reviews a few of the cultural and social influences on alcohol use and places individual alcohol use within the contexts and environments where people live and interact. It includes a discussion of macrolevel factors, such as advertising and marketing, immigration and discrimination factors, and how neighborhoods, families, and peers influence alcohol use. Specifically, the article describes how social and cultural contexts influence alcohol use/misuse and then explores future directions for alcohol research

    IR and UV Galaxies at z=0.6 -- Evolution of Dust Attenuation and Stellar Mass as Revealed by SWIRE and GALEX

    We study dust attenuation and stellar mass of z∌0.6\rm z\sim 0.6 star-forming galaxies using new SWIRE observations in IR and GALEX observations in UV. Two samples are selected from the SWIRE and GALEX source catalogs in the SWIRE/GALEX field ELAIS-N1-00 (Ω=0.8\Omega = 0.8 deg2^2). The UV selected sample has 600 galaxies with photometric redshift (hereafter photo-z) 0.5≀z≀0.70.5 \leq z \leq 0.7 and NUV≀23.5\leq 23.5 (corresponding to \rm L_{FUV} \geq 10^{9.6} L_\sun). The IR selected sample contains 430 galaxies with f24ÎŒm≄0.2f_{24\mu m} \geq 0.2 mJy (\rm L_{dust} \geq 10^{10.8} L_\sun) in the same photo-z range. It is found that the mean Ldust/LFUV\rm L_{dust}/L_{FUV} ratios of the z=0.6 UV galaxies are consistent with that of their z=0 counterparts of the same LFUV\rm L_{FUV}. For IR galaxies, the mean Ldust/LFUV\rm L_{dust}/L_{FUV} ratios of the z=0.6 LIRGs (\rm L_{dust} \sim 10^{11} L_\sun) are about a factor of 2 lower than local LIRGs, whereas z=0.6 ULIRGs (\rm L_{dust} \sim 10^{12} L_\sun) have the same mean Ldust/LFUV\rm L_{dust}/L_{FUV} ratios as their local counterparts. This is consistent with the hypothesis that the dominant component of LIRG population has changed from large, gas rich spirals at z>0.5>0.5 to major-mergers at z=0. The stellar mass of z=0.6 UV galaxies of \rm L_{FUV} \leq 10^{10.2} L_\sun is about a factor 2 less than their local counterparts of the same luminosity, indicating growth of these galaxies. The mass of z=0.6 UV lunmous galaxies (UVLGs: \rm L_{FUV} > 10^{10.2} L_\sun) and IR selected galaxies, which are nearly exclusively LIRGs and ULIRGs, is the same as their local counterparts.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement series dedicated to GALEX result

    UV and FIR selected star-forming galaxies at z=0: differences and overlaps

    We study two samples of local galaxies, one is UV (GALEX) selected and the other FIR (IRAS) selected, to address the question whether UV and FIR surveys see the two sides ('bright' and 'dark') of the star formation of the same population of galaxies or two different populations of star forming galaxies. No significant difference between the Ltot_{tot} (=L60+LFUV=L_{60}+L_{FUV}) luminosity functions of the UV and FIR samples is found. Also, after the correction for the `Malmquist bias' (bias for flux limited samples), the FIR-to-UV ratio v.s. Ltot_{tot} relations of the two samples are consistent with each other. In the range of 9 \la \log(L_{tot}/L_\sun) \la 12, both can be approximated by a simple linear relation of \log (L_{60}/L_{FUV})=\log(L_{tot}/L_\sun)-9.66. These are consistent with the hypothesis that the two samples represent the same population of star forming galaxies, and their well documented differences in Ltot_{tot} and in FIR-to-UV ratio are due only to the selection effect. A comparison between the UV luminosity functions shows marginal evidence for a population of faint UV galaxies missing in the FIR selected sample. The contribution from these 'FIR-quiet' galaxies to the overall UV population is insignificant, given that the K-band luminosity functions (i.e. the stellar mass functions) of the two samples do not show any significant difference.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures.     Functional Coupling of Ca2+ Channels to Ryanodine Receptors at Presynaptic Terminals: Amplification of Exocytosis and Plasticity

    Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR) enhances a variety of cellular Ca2+ signaling and functions. How CICR affects impulse-evoked transmitter release is unknown. At frog motor nerve terminals, repetitive Ca2+ entries slowly prime and subsequently activate the mechanism of CICR via ryanodine receptors and asynchronous exocytosis of transmitters. Further Ca2+ entry inactivates the CICR mechanism and the absence of Ca2+ entry for >1 min results in its slow depriming. We now report here that the activation of this unique CICR markedly enhances impulse-evoked exocytosis of transmitter. The conditioning nerve stimulation (10–20 Hz, 2–10 min) that primes the CICR mechanism produced the marked enhancement of the amplitude and quantal content of end-plate potentials (EPPs) that decayed double exponentially with time constants of 1.85 and 10 min. The enhancement was blocked by inhibitors of ryanodine receptors and was accompanied by a slight prolongation of the peak times of EPP and the end-plate currents estimated from deconvolution of EPP. The conditioning nerve stimulation also enhanced single impulse- and tetanus-induced rises in intracellular Ca2+ in the terminals with little change in time course. There was no change in the rate of growth of the amplitudes of EPPs in a short train after the conditioning stimulation. On the other hand, the augmentation and potentiation of EPP were enhanced, and then decreased in parallel with changes in intraterminal Ca2+ during repetition of tetani. The results suggest that ryanodine receptors exist close to voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in the presynaptic terminals and amplify the impulse-evoked exocytosis and its plasticity via CICR after Ca2+-dependent priming

    Growth characteristics in individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta in North America: results from a multicenter study.

    PurposeOsteogenesis imperfecta (OI) predisposes people to recurrent fractures, bone deformities, and short stature. There is a lack of large-scale systematic studies that have investigated growth parameters in OI.MethodsUsing data from the Linked Clinical Research Centers, we compared height, growth velocity, weight, and body mass index (BMI) in 552 individuals with OI. Height, weight, and BMI were plotted on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention normative curves.ResultsIn children, the median z-scores for height in OI types I, III, and IV were -0.66, -6.91, and -2.79, respectively. Growth velocity was diminished in OI types III and IV. The median z-score for weight in children with OI type III was -4.55. The median z-scores for BMI in children with OI types I, III, and IV were 0.10, 0.91, and 0.67, respectively. Generalized linear model analyses demonstrated that the height z-score was positively correlated with the severity of the OI subtype (P < 0.001), age, bisphosphonate use, and rodding (P < 0.05).ConclusionFrom the largest cohort of individuals with OI, we provide median values for height, weight, and BMI z-scores that can aid the evaluation of overall growth in the clinic setting. This study is an important first step in the generation of OI-specific growth curves

    PDX1 dynamically regulates pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma initiation and maintenance

    Aberrant activation of embryonic signaling pathways is frequent in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA), making developmental regulators therapeutically attractive. Here we demonstrate diverse functions for pancreatic and duodenal homeobox 1 (PDX1), a transcription factor indispensable for pancreas development, in the progression from normal exocrine cells to metastatic PDA. We identify a critical role for PDX1 in maintaining acinar cell identity, thus resisting the formation of pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN)-derived PDA. Upon neoplastic transformation, the role of PDX1 changes from tumor-suppressive to oncogenic. Interestingly, subsets of malignant cells lose PDX1 expression while undergoing epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and PDX1 loss is associated with poor outcome. This stage-specific functionality arises from profound shifts in PDX1 chromatin occupancy from acinar cells to PDA. In summary, we report distinct roles of PDX1 at different stages of PDA, suggesting that therapeutic approaches against this potential target need to account for its changing functions at different stages of carcinogenesis. These findings provide insight into the complexity of PDA pathogenesis and advocate a rigorous investigation of therapeutically tractable targets at distinct phases of PDA development and progression

    Infrared luminosity functions of AKARI Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies

    By cross-correlating the AKARI all-sky survey in six infrared (IR) bands (9, 18, 65, 90, 140 and 160 ÎŒm) with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies, we identified 2357 IR galaxies with a spectroscopic redshift. This is not just one of the largest samples of local IR galaxies, but AKARI provides crucial far-IR (FIR) bands for accurately measuring the galaxy spectral energy distribution (SED) across the peak of the dust emission at > 100 ÎŒ m. By fitting modern IR SED models to the AKARI photometry, we measured the total infrared luminosity (L_(IR)) of individual galaxies. Using this L_(IR), we constructed the luminosity functions (LF) of IR galaxies at a median redshift of z= 0.031. The LF agrees well with that at z= 0.0082 (the Revised Bright Galaxy Sample), showing smooth and continuous evolution towards higher redshift LFs measured in the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) deep field. By integrating the IR LF weighted by L_(IR), we measured the local cosmic IR luminosity density of Ω_(IR_= (3.8^(+5.8)_(−1.2)) × 10^8 L_⊙ Mpc^(−3). We separate galaxies into active galactic nuclei (AGN), star-forming galaxies (SFG) and composite by using the [N ii]/Hα versus [O iii]/HÎČ line ratios. The fraction of AGN shows a continuous increase with increasing L_(IR) from 25 to 90 per cent at 9 10^(11) L_⊙, coinciding with the break of both the SFG and AGN IR LFs. At L_(IR)≀ 10^(11) L_⊙, SFG dominates IR LFs. Only 1.1 ± 0.1 per cent of Ω_(IR) is produced by luminous infrared galaxies (L_(IR) > 10^(11) L_⊙), and only 0.03 ± 0.01 per cent by ultraluminous infrared galaxies (L_(IR) > 10^(12) L_⊙) in the local Universe. Compared with high-redshift results from the AKARI NEP deep survey, we observed a strong evolution of Ω^(SFG)IR^∝ (1 +z)^(4.1±0.4) and Ω^(AGN)IR^∝ (1+z)^(4.1±0.5). Our results show that all of our measured quantities (IR LFs, L^*, Ω^(AGN)IR, Ω^(SFG)IR) show smooth and steady increase from lower redshift (the Revised Bright Galaxy Sample) to higher redshift (the AKARI NEP deep survey)
